The numbers don't lie, and we have to be brave enough to face them. White people, we need to have a serious conversation about how you use your #privilege. You voted to maintain #whitesupremacy no matter the cost to your own freedoms. Latino men, I see you, and I acknowledge the complexities you face in this system. We have to have some tough conversations about #allyship. We can't let fear and division win; our freedoms, our very future as a nation, depend on recognizing the insidious nature of white supremacy. You voted to have your own people rounded up and deported and seemingly didn't care that you are seen as garbage Black men decided that a black woman should not lead them. How utterly demoralizing to witness. How small of you. This wasn't just about politics; it was about #representation, about shattering that highest, hardest glass ceiling. We need to see ourselves reflected in positions of power to believe in a future where our voices truly matter. Instead, we're left grappling with the same old systems of oppression... I'm seeing so much surrender by Black folk on social media. I sympathize with their readiness to retreat versus fight. It's exhausting, this constant fight for basic dignity and respect. #America had a choice. Between a future of HOPE and UNITY vs. one of darkness and division. Americans chose DARKNESS. We cannot overlook the deep recesses of #racism, #misogyny, and backwardness that defines the American culture - that drove votes against progress. These forces prevented women like Shirley Chisolm, Hillary Clinton and now #KamalaHarris from occupying the top spot of political leadership. The political glass ceiling remains unbroken in a country that prides itself on ideas of democracy and rights. Yet, they rallied for a man who said he'd be a #dictator on Day 1, who pushes back women's rights 50 years and who openly declares his contempt for peoples of color, the disabled, the poor and marginalized, and his own military members. Americans in their 2024 vote said we are okay with all this savagery. We applaud it. We stand by it. Face it, Americans are saying: This is who we are. Remember, #Hitler also had massive support among ordinary folk. It was the lack of resistance to Hitler that allowed to be successful in his project of extermination of the Jews. Well, we are at this moment again in history. We are witnessing the origins of totalitarianism, American style. Pay attention. Kamala Harris - this African-American, South Asian, #Jamaican woman, will go down in history as a great heroine of democracy, freedom, rights and women political leadership. What a powerful political figure she has become.She brought us to the mountaintop and showed us the promised land. Shame we said, no thanks. We chose the DARKNESS. Shame on America. Shame on us. To those who supported Kamala, get ready to fight like HELL for our rights and freedoms in the months and years to come. #leadership
I recently made my first-ever financial contribution to a political campaign a few weeks ago. This particular campaign is exceptionally deserving of support. #KamalaHarris has proven herself to be an outstanding candidate. Despite initial doubts, she has consistently demonstrated her dedication to both her own success and the nation. Her campaign has been exemplary, showcasing remarkable courage and composure in the face of adversity. This is a true testament to the qualities of a genuine #leader. Regardless of the outcome, she has conducted herself with utmost class and dignity. My deepest respect to her.
We may be on the cusp of history, my friends. Yet, when I see young women standing behind Mr. Trump and cheering, I cannot help but feel a sense of empathy for them. I sincerely hope that they never have to face a difficult situation, such as a pregnancy. I hope they have a problem-free experience in having children, unlike many women who face challenges. I hope they are aware that doctors will not inquire about their political affiliations. They will simply deny them the medical care they need. A large and enthusiastic audience attended the #Masterclass on #ExecutivePresence that I facilitated earlier this week.. The participants posed several insightful and thought-provoking #questions. The one that resonated most with me was: ๐Ÿ‘‰"Can one possess #humility and still exude executive presence?"๐Ÿค” My response was: "Certainly. Executive presence does not necessitate overt confidence and excessive self-assurance. Nor does it mean being loud or dominating conversations. In fact, such behavior is antithetical to executive presence. If one monopolizes conversations, they are effectively not listening. Strategic silence and reserve holds significant value. Individuals who embody humility, grace, and dignity, and also contribute profound insights and expertise tend to exude greater depth and #gravitas than those who are overly vocal or seek constant attention. An absolute delight to be seated next to Ana Amaral of Navigant Credit Union at a recent Women's Fund of Rhode Island event. I was particularly pleased to learn that she is currently enrolled in a #leadershipdevelopment workshop at her workplace. I am very impressed with my friend Alice. We have been running a sort of private library together this summer. Each month, she visits my house to borrow a book. I make a note of when she checks out a book from my shelf and the return date. The only condition is that she must provide a book report so that I can also be reminded of what the book teaches. She started with financial books. So far, she has read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" and has definitely improved her financial literacy. She gave me a full lesson on the author's advice on wealth creation. The next book she borrowed was "Get Good with Money" and she was full of knowledge to share. Yesterday, I asked her if she wanted to stick to financial books, and I was ready to lend her "How to Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck" or Dave Ramsey's "The Total Money Makeover". However, she requested "something motivational," so I reluctantly loaned her one of my favorite books. She is now onto her third book, "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelo. I am eagerly looking forward to hearing her report. She has thoroughly perused each page of these books. While I have already read all of these books, it is beneficial to be reminded of their contents. I eagerly anticipate her insights and key takeaways. My personal takeaway from this experience is the importance of reducing screen time, setting aside distractions, and prioritizing reading as a means of personal development. #bookshelf #readers #personaldevelopment #personalgrowth #personalbranding
I recently saw a post on social media of a young man lamenting his experience on the #jobhunt. The lack of responses from potential #employers and the rejections hurt the most he reports. But what struck me was what he said he learned. His biggest lesson was that: “#Skills matter more than degrees. I thought my degree would open doors, but companies care more about what I can actually do”. AS THEY SHOULD! I wish I could erect his quote on a billboard for everyone to see. Wake up folks. Your qualifications and credentials is not a sufficient signal of what you can deliver. A college #degree - in reality - does not communicate much. It is vital to clarify, define and assess what skills you actually have cultivated in that period of study. Be able to demonstrate what you can actually do, and the results you have achieved/can achieve by deploying such #skills. Poor lad also says he learned that: “The market changes fast. Skills that were hot last year might not matter now. It is hard to keep up”. NO IT’S NOT HARD. simply, let your paradigm be ‘#continuouslearning’ especially in the arenas where you wish to make an impact. Decide to cultivate new skills and remain curious about your field, and opportunities will be chasing you down. It will be a skills-based economy by 2027. Quit advertising your degrees as we don’t know what you are trying to convey. Today, as I celebrate another year around the sun (#happybirthday to me ), I’ve been reflecting on my younger self and how far I have come. From the baby born with tumor on my upper lip and a shortened lingua frenulum (web of tissue which connects the tongue to floor of mouth) which required surgery and weeks of #speechtherapy to be able to speak to a strong woman with a powerful voice and leader who owns my value. First, I am forever grateful to my mother for her courage and determination to seek out a solution and prioritize my ability to speak fixed because in that single act, she changed the trajectory of my life. Today, I wish to recognize and say #happybirthday to my younger self! Here is I would say to that young girl who carried around so much shame and doubt: I know there are times when self-doubt creeps in, and your voice feels small. But remember, you possess an incredible strength and a unique perspective that the world needs. Embrace your voice, own your story, and don’t be afraid to let your light shine. Finding your purpose will be a journey, but it’s one worth taking. When you lead with your value, you’ll not only discover your own path but also inspire others to find theirs. Remember to prioritize your #wellness and well-being. Take care of yourself so you can serve others. Finally, Hume, be open to opportunities. What an incredible honor to be invited to serve as an external #examiner for a Ph.D. thesis. Undoubtedly, this is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the doctoral journey of a budding #scholar and to engage with the esteemed scholars at Universities elsewhere. Candidly, my plate is full with my own book project, ongoing sabbatical research in the Caribbean, and personal commitments, but it’s hard to pass on such an incredible offer. Of course, this invitation took me back to my own Ph.D. thesis which I undertook at the University of Waikato, New Zealand; the final few months ahead of submission was the most grueling. Then came and the dreaded #doctoraldefense. I appreciated the great contributions made by the panel of professors who supervised my thesis, and the positive reviews by the external reviewers. To complete a #doctoral thesis is quite a feat; then to defend your #dissertation in an oral exam takes courage and gumption. My recent trip to Canada reminded me of the incredible journey we've taken since our first Olympic Games in 1948 (London). Here, at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, I'm pointing to Jamaica's plaque commemorating #DonaldQuarrie's victory in the men's 200m at the 1976 Games. Our athletes stand on the backs of the legends who laid the foundation. We may experience highs and lows, but Jamaica's spirit is too forbidsble to ever be counted out. If you don't like #walking, Montreal is not for you. Here, the #pedestrian is King. As part of a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, a part of Old Montreal has been made pedestrian-only. I understand it. The streets are pretty narrow snd traffic is tight. Not to mention the parking spots and garages. Better be a good driver! I haven't minded the pedestrian friendly atmosphere. So far, Ive clocked and exceeded my 10,000 step limit everyday. The pedestrian focus streets also creates a wonderful sense of community for residents and tourists. Our visit to the Montreal Olympic Stadium was an unforgettable experience. Although it's closed for renovations, this iconic structure, home to the 1976 Olympics, still stands as a testament to architectural innovation with its towering presence, the tallest incline tower on the world. We were captivated by the storyboards and plaques that lined the grounds, detailing Montreal's journey to host the Games. From the multiple bids submitted to the final awarding in 1970, it's a tale of perseverance and triumph. ๐Ÿ† As a #Jamaican, it was a real thrill seeing the plaque for "Jamaique" (Jamaica) and the legendary #DonaldQuarrie's name, forever etched in history for his gold medal win in the 100m. ๐Ÿฅ‡ We also spotted Hasely Crawford's name, Trinidad's first Olympic champion, whose legacy lives on in the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain. ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡น And yes, even Bruce Jenner's (now Caitlyn Jenner) name was there, the decathlon champion for the USA in '76. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Kudos to my partner for predicting we'd find Jenner's name on the same plaque as Quarrie! ๐Ÿคฏ This visit was more than just sightseeing; it was a walk through sporting history, a reminder of the incredible athletes who graced these grounds, and a testament to the unifying power of the Olympics. ๐ŸŒ #MontrealOlympicStadium #1976Olympics #SportingHistory #JamaicanPride #CaribbeanExcellence #OlympicChampions #architecturalmarvel
