Before the academy, Hume was already doing the work. As a broadcast journalist with Jamaica's Information Service (JIS TV) and Radio Jamaica, she covered the stories and policies that shaped public life across the Caribbean. She went on to serve as a strategic communication adviser and political consultant to the Government of Jamaica, coaching leaders on messaging, public relations, crisis communication, and reputation management, while also building the brands of prominent reggae entertainers and business leaders.
It was through that sustained, high-pressure work — navigating the political arena and advising leaders through some of the most demanding communication challenges in public life — that she developed the practitioner intelligence and instinct that defines her methodology today.
Her proprietary framework, The Currency of YOU™, is built on a foundational premise: that who you are — your human skills and core values — shows up in everything you do. One year ago today, I had the honor of delivering the Faculty Commencement Address for the School of Humanities, Arts, and Education (SHAE) at Roger Williams University.
I did not hold back. My message to the graduating class of 2025 was personal, direct, and urgent.
We are living in a skills-based economy, and for young professionals entering the workforce right now, that changes everything.
Employers are increasingly looking beyond the degree to what you can actually demonstrate, deliver, and contribute from day one.
I also told the graduates to be clear about the unique value they bring to the table.
To know their strengths, understand which problems they are uniquely equipped to solve.
To lean into their human skills — empathy, communication, leadership — not as "soft skills: but as essential skills, some of the hardest to master and most urgently needed right now.
This message is just as relevant for graduates crossing stages across the country right now, and every professional navigating this moment.
To the class of 2025 — wherever you are one year on — I hope you are standing tall and leading from who you are.

Throwback to 2017 — Bogotá, Colombia.
I traveled there to research nation branding, drawn by a question central to my work on #BrandJamaica:
how does a nation with a damaged international reputation make a sovereign decision to reclaim its own narrative?
Colombia had spent decades defined globally by conflict, drug trafficking, and instability.
What I found was a compelling case study in post-conflict governance and deliberate national rebranding — the kind of intentional narrative reclamation I've been arguing Jamaica needs.
Jamaica has long navigated its own version of this tension. It carries an extraordinarily powerful cultural brand, yet official discourse reduces it to sun, sand, and sea.
A tourism-centric narrative that leaves its deeper intellectual, cultural, and economic assets severely under-leveraged.
Colombia's rebrand is #ProfessionalSovereignty™ at a national scale — owning the narrative, reclaiming identity, and leveraging assets on its own terms.
That trip also reminded me of something personal.
My expertise traveled with me. The intellectual capital I had built researching the politics of national reputation crossed borders, opened doors, and deepened my understanding of Jamaica's brand from the outside in.
Your professional currency is not tied to a single employer, institution, or geography. It goes where you go. Your expertise is your passport.

Last day of the semester. Nobody is more excited than me today.💃🙌
But before I fully exhale, I want to share something that happened in my last class.
My students took a moment to share what this semester meant to them.
What they said affirmed everything I believe about how this work should be done.
They talked about the rigor, high expectations I had of them, and of being challenged in ways that felt encouraging.
Many students said the job interview simulation was the standout lesson, as well as the teaching demonstration around workplace discrimination.
To me, if you can't teach it, you haven't learned it.
This is why I teach the way I teach. Applied work. Skill development. Career readiness that connects directly to the real world.
I am not interested in students leaving my classroom with knowledge alone.
I want them to leave knowing they have portable assets — skills, lived experience, values, and a sense of who they are.
Noo employer can give them this personal currency, and no layoff can take away.
These are my emerging sovereigns 💃🙌. Watching them claim that is its own reward.

The room went quiet.
Every physician and scientist in that room had spent decades earning credentials that were supposed to speak for themselves.

I return to work today after a glorious Spring Break.
It reminds me, as it does every time I step back into someone else's structure, that as professionals, we are loaning our talent to institutions.
The institution provides the paycheck, the job title, and the brand name and logo we attach to the end of your email.
We call that security.
But they can revoke all of it tomorrow. No warning. No negotiation. No requirement to explain.
The job title disappears. The logo comes off the email. The infrastructure that made you legible to the world as a credible professional is gone.
What remains is the only thing that was ever truly yours.
Most professionals have never taken full inventory of what that is. Not because their professional assets don't exist. But because nobody ever taught them how to audit their own currency.
That is the work I am most interested in.

On visiting the Mark Twain House and Museum today, I was struck by this quote.
Twain believed in living passionately and taking in all that life has to offer, including both joy and hardship.
By "sampling" it, he implies he has tasted the full flavor of human existence.
I hope one day to be able to say that I have lived, I have seen it all, and I am satisfied with the experience of this life.
Mark Twain is considered to be the father of American literature. His best known work is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884).
Born in 1835 in Missouri, he lived in this Hartford house from 1874 to 1891.

The most expensive thing you can carry is expertise you aren’t using.
We’re taught how to build experience, but we’re rarely taught how to actually own it. Most of us are sitting on a mountain of what I call “#latentcapital”—technical skills, specialized knowledge, specific ways we solve problems and the unique judgment we’ve earned over years of hard work.
The problem is that this value just sits there, gathering dust, because it hasn’t been put into circulation.
True professional freedom starts when you stop just “having” experience and start naming and using it. It’s not about finding new skills; it’s about excavating the ones you already have and finally putting them to work.

Mastering your craft means never thinking you've arrived.
This picture is from this morning. My classmate Martha and I were sitting, waiting for our final #executivecoaching mentoring session to begin.
And while we waited, I thought: this is exactly what it looks like to stay coachable.
Showing up. Being the student. No matter how many years you've been doing this work.
Being coachable means you're willing to be honest with yourself.
It means receiving feedback without defensiveness, sitting with discomfort, and staying open to seeing your blind spots.
It means trading your ego for growth.
The best leaders I know never stopped being coached. You can't pour more into others if you're not continuously filling yourself up.
You can't refine what you're not willing to examine.

This week, my Communication in Organizations students had the opportunity to learn from Weayonnoh Nelson-Davies, Esq., Executive Director of the Rhode Island Economic Progress Institute.
Rather than simply describing stakeholder strategy, she brought it to life.
Through role play and direct engagement with students (*great acting skills 👏),
she demonstrated how messaging must shift depending on the audience.
This means nurturing one stakeholder group often requires a different tone, emphasis, and framing than another.
Her work at the RI Economic Progress Institute (EPI) centers on advancing policies that support lower-income communities in Rhode Island.
She showed students how communication becomes the bridge between mission and buy-in; that the message must be relevant, clear and build trust especially with stakeholders not in agreement.
The students were fully engaged. They asked thoughtful questions and leaned into the exercise.
We discuss stakeholder relationships as a theory and then try to have students apply this to real American organizations, but it really comes to life wheb they can see it in practice.
Takeaway: Stakeholder relationships are built, intentionally, one message and one story at a time.

Had a class observation today by the Dean's Office — part of my application for Full Professor.
Basically, academia's version of a surprise performance review, except you know it's coming and somehow still forget it's happening. 😅
I was so locked into the conversation with my students about media literacy that I genuinely forgot someone was evaluating me.
Honestly? That might be the best sign.
For me, teaching isn't about the grade. It's about media literacy — making sure that when my students leave the classroom and operate as citizens, they're doing it from a place of information and clarity.
So they can make informed choices about their lives, at the polls, everywhere.
That part never gets old. So vial in this moment.
What does it really mean to prioritize #stakeholders in your #communicationstrategy?
Today, students in my COMM 360: Communication in Organizations class at Roger Williams University will explore that question with Weayonnoh Nelson-Davies, Esq., Executive Director of the Rhode Island Economic Progress Institute.
Weayonnoh will speak with students about stakeholder relationships — how organizations decide which stakeholders to prioritize, how communication choices signal those priorities, and the strategies leaders use to cultivate and sustain trust over time.
A leader, attorney, and advocate for equity and social justice, her work spans legal aid, public policy, and people-powered budget advocacy here in Rhode Island.
Her career reflects what we discuss in class every week: communication is not neutral. It shapes power, access, and opportunity.
Grateful to connect students with leaders whose work bridges theory and practice in meaningful ways.

Last week, my Communication in Organizations class at RWU heard from @theresaagonia, Chief of Staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America,
Two insights stood out:
🔥 Internal stakeholders are the most important public. They must be intentionally prioritized.
She also shared that leadership communication must be culturally relevant, and responsive to the moment:
🔥" Right now, people are looking for hope, purpose, and authenticity. If leadership communication ignores that reality, trust erodes".
We also talked about leadership brand- how personality, engagement style, and transparency shape organizational culture more than any formal statement ever could.
Students asked thoughtful questions, especially about career paths. I appreciated her honesty:
🔥"Careers are rarely linear. It’s okay not to know exactly what you want to do. Growth often comes from stepping into opportunities you didn’t originally plan for", she told students.
Her own path reflects that: from Communications Director for the Mayor of Central Falls, to Deputy Chief of Staff for the Mayor of Providence, and now national nonprofit leadership.

We often confuse "building a brand" with "being on social media." But social media is just a tool to convey your value.
Your real brand is your Identity - who you are, and the unique value you bring to every room you enter. It exists whether you post about it or not.
But there is a second, more important step: #Sovereignty.
You can have all the value in the world, but if you don't own the "Title Deed" to your reputation, you’re always going to be dependent on someone else’s permission.

Personal branding isn't what you think it is.
If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I talk about #personalbranding a lot. But I want to be clear about what I mean—and what I don't.
Social media? That’s just a megaphone. It’s a tool to communicate. It isn't the brand.
Your personal brand is who you are. It’s that unique value you bring to the table that nobody else can replicate. It’s your identity.
It exists whether you have a LinkedIn or Instagram profile or not.
But lately, I’ve been reframing how we look at that identity through the lens of #Sovereignty.
Think of it this way: You can have all the value in the world, but if you’re only ever using it to build someone else’s house, you’re essentially "renting" your reputation.
In other words, you’re doing the work, but they hold the keys.
Sovereignty is about moving from "renting" your reputation to owning it. It’s securing the Title Deed to your own genius.
I’m not moving away from personal branding; I’m just focusing on the part that actually matters: making sure that value belongs to you, and nobody else.
Your brand is YOU - who you are and the unique value you bring to the table. Sovereignty is the freedom to own it.

A week ago today, I said farewell to my friend, colleague and center of gravity at work, Dr. Anjali Ram.
She had a lengthy 26 year tenure as Professor of Communication at Roger Williams University.
Still stunning, gut wrenching and entirely discombobulating to me that she is no longer with us.
Yet so grateful to have known her in the meaningful way I had.
Anjali was a fierce intellectual who centered social justice in her work, studying how marginalized groups show up in mainstream American television, Hindu feminisms, migrations patterns of South Asians and Bollywood, the Indian film industry.
She taught Intercultural Communication, Qualitative Research Methods, Public Speaking, and Bollywood.
But above all, she was a human-centered personality that made others feel seen and valued, the truest gift a human being can offer another.
Thank you for all your love and support my friend. Your light can never be diminished.

Heartbroken at the passing of my friend and colleague Faculty, Dr. Anjali Ram.

Graceful, brilliant, and profoundly human-centered, Anjali showed us what empathetic leadership and true collegiality look like.
For years, Anjali, Kamille, and I shared lunch twice a week. It was our bi-weekly pow wow —conversation, laughter, reflection.
Today, leaving campus without her, without stopping by her office felt deeply unsettling.
I felt untethered, like I had lost my center of gravity at work.
Anjali carried herself with grace, intellect, and a deeply human-centered way of being. She understood the emotional labor of this work, and was always ready to hold space during the challenging moments.
I will miss her more than I can put into words,
Yet, I am grateful beyond measure to have walked alongside her for these years.

I got really positive feedback, thankfully as the ICF- International Coaching Federation Code of Ethics and coaching structure is pretty exacting.
While that always feels good, the real value is in hearing where you can stretch and strengthen your style and methodology.
Growth asks for openness, curiosity, and a willingness to listen without getting defensive.
This is where many people struggle, they can't handle feedback. They rebut or recoil.
A #growthmindset isn’t about perfection though, it’s about being coachable.
Because if you can’t receive feedback, you can’t grow. And growth is/ought to be the goal.

For almost 20 years as a college professor and leadership coach, I’ve watched brilliant #leaders trade their potential for a job title, without ever truly owning their value.
They work hard, they deliver results, but they remain "tenants" in their own careers.
Time to change that.
I’m currently "minting" the framework for my new book project: The Currency of YOU.
This is the 5-step Roadmap to Professional Sovereignty
✅ 1. THE GOLD STANDARD (The Mint): Leading with Who YOU Are to define your own value from the inside out. Strategic self-awareness is the base metal of your personal brand.
✅ 2. The VAULT (The Audit): Gathering the Receipts of your mastery so your brand is asset-backed and undeniable. You cannot back a currency without reserves.
✅ 3. THE SIGNAL (Strategic Resonance): Conveying your authority through linguistic and symbolic signals so the market hears your frequency. Wealth that stays in the vault is dead capital.
✅ 4. THE EXCHANGE (The Negotiation): Navigating the Bias Tax and the social interpretation of your worth. This is where we learn to negotiate value in high-stakes rooms and bypass systems that refuse to recognize our currency.
✅ 5. THE SOVEREIGN (Liquidity): Achieving the Portability to withdraw your brilliance and invest it wherever you choose. This is the ultimate goal: a brand that belongs to you, not an institution.
This is about the de-commodification of talent.

The end of one year, and the start of a new one is always a moment of deep reflection for me.
I challenge myself to acknowledge the most meaningful moments as well as the difficult times.
I look back on how I showed up in those times, and how I might grow and improve as a human being, and also as a trusted professional.
Life is not always cheerful but I've found it's how you respond to it that truly matters 👇

I am profoundly grateful for the opportunities, lessons, and subtle triumphs that this year has afforded me.
The year 2025 served as a reminder that #personalleadership truly begins with how we show up for ourselves.
You have to literally get into the driver's seat of your own life and lead from within.
When you commit to #personalgrowth and uphold your values, opportunities not only emerge but also align with your objectives.
This year, I was grateful to serve so many leaders as they clarified their #personalbrand and learned to communicate their value with clarity, confidence, and credibility.
I’m thankful for the new networks and relationships built, and for the wisdom to release those no longer aligned with my values or purpose.
That, too, is personal leadership.
I’m especially grateful for health, vitality, and focus because nothing meaningful is possible without #wellbeing.
One of my most meaningful personal commitments this year was intentionally stepping away from the constant digital noise.
I managed to stop the scroll, hiding social media apps for weeks at a time, and creating space to quiet my mind, and read for leisure to restore my sense of balance.
As we step into 2026, I’m carrying forward gratitude, grace, optimism, and intention.
Remember, we are here to grow —intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and financially.

2025 Year in Review ✔️| If I had to name the standout moment of my year, without hesitation, this is it.
A powerful two-day event that combined a keynote and a hands-on workshop with MAPFRE insurance leaders and agents (Northeast regionn), centered on one core idea: as AI accelerates, human skills become the true competitive advantage.
I opened with a keynote on “Why the Future of Business Is Personal,” exploring why trust, relationships, and judgment, as well as your presence matter more than ever in an AI-driven business environment.
Day two went deeper with a Human Skills Workshop, where agents defined, owned, and applied their human skills in practical ways to build relationships, win business, and show up more intentionally with clients.
What most people never see are the weeks of behind-the-scenes work—the planning, conversations and collaboration that made both days impactful.
Grateful for the partnership with MAPFRE, the engaged leaders and agents, and my mentor and co-trainer @maggie__werner 🙌 for helping bring this work to life and the tremendous success it was!

2025 Highlights | I challenged myself to rediscover #reading for leisure in 2025.
What a joy it has been. As a Professor, I read all the time. My work requires reading textbooks, journal pieces and media text, not to mention reading students' work.
But I found myself scrolling way too much when I'm not at work, and I slowly began to resent the noise of social media; my mind felt cluttered with information that was not deeply meaningful. Just fragmented bits of people's opinion.
I bought several #books and novels from esteemed authors such as Isabel Allende, Salman Rushdie, Claire Keegan, and David Brooks, whose work I appreciate for its exploration of self-discovery.
Throughout 2025, I dedicated an hour every other morning to quiet reading, and the aforementioned titles represent my selections for the year. "Foster" by Claire Keegan is also among the books I read, though it is not depicted.
It has been the most internally transformative and rewarding experience.I've given myself in years. I still scroll some but I largely have let go of the noise, and freed up space in my mind to think, imagine and produce.
The quiet has been tremendously helpful to my sense of #wellbeing.
I tried to suggest this to my intelligent friends, but some of them wish to listen to audiobooks. This is not equivalent to reading.
Try it. You'll find it utterly liberating.
